The reading and lecture both are about the use of turtle Excluder device(ted) to reduce accidental deaths of sea turtles every year. The author of the reading thinks that using ted is a great option to reduce deaths of sea turtles. The lecturer challenges three specific claims made by the author and is of the opinion that ted is a good idea but is far from perfect and needs improvement to a great extent.

To begin with, the author argues that ted consists of a mechanical barrier which doesn’t allow any animal larger than ten centimetres to be caught in the trawl, thus reducing deaths of sea turtles by trawls. At the same time, he says that the shrimp yield is not affected; the shrimps can pass through and are caught. this specific claim is challenged by the lecturer; he asserts that small and midsized turtles like loggerhead are still caught in the shrimp trawls because of their smaller size. Apart from this, he adds that shrimp yield is reduced due to accidental bumping of shrimps with the metal barriers of ted.

Secondly, the article mentions that the shrimp turtle law states that all boats must have ted installed on their boats and certain organisations monitor shrimping vessels to ensure installation of ted. The lecturer is of the opinion that these shrimping vehicles, when far away in the sea, remove the installed ted to increase shrimp yield and their profits. Furthermore, he states that monitoring the shrimping vessel while it’s actually trying to catch shrimps is impossible.

Finally, the author posits that America is in charge of all the import and hence, only certified shrimping vessels(with ted installed) would be allowed to sell their shrimps. In contrast to this, the lecturer says that shrimp industry is international and fake documentation can be arranged easily as different countries have different documentation formats.
