The reading and lecture are both about whether a girl in the painting sketched by her sister Cassandra is of her sister Jane Austen or not. The author of the reading states that although the painting is not entitled her name there are some convincing evidence to prove the girl in th portrait is Austen. The lecturer disagrees. He mentions the proposing evidence hardly proves the girl is Austen and attacks each of the claim made in the article.
Firstly, the author begins by stating that after several years of Austen demise since her family had given permission to use her portrait as an illustration, now there are claiming the painting to be of Austen. However the professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that it was after decades of Austen death that her family are claiming so the family who gave permission had not not seen her in real. Therefore, this claim of her family does not seem to be convincing.
Secondly, according to the writing Cassandra’s painting clearly resembles Austen in many aspects such as her eyes, mouth, body shape as so on. This shows the girl in the painting is adult Austen. The speaker on other hand points out that since Austen had a joint family there were many cousin of same age as her. Hence, the girl might portray any one of her niece instead of Austen.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that painting was drawn during the time when Austen was in her teen age. In addition, the style that portrait depicts exactly same with the painter Austen family would hire. Not only this, the painter used to be active during that period. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that stamp on back of the canvas shows that the painting was painted by another artist who used to sketch at the time when Austen was in her late 20’s rather than her teen age. Thus, the painting resemble another girl.
As we can see, the author and lecturer holds conflicting views on girl in the painting. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argumernt.
