The reading and lecture are both about the amatuer portrait painted by Austen’s sister Cassandra which later on professionally painted. The reading passage states the since there are not many instances for what adult Austen would looked like, many people believe the girl in the portrait is Austen. The lecturer disagrees. He opposed that the girl does not resemble Austen and attacks each of the claim maide in the article.
Firstly, the author begins by stating that after several decades of her demise her family decendents had given permission to use her portrait as an illustration in her letter. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that the portrait was authorized after almost 70 years of Austen death so the family who are claiming had not not actually seen her in real life. Therefore, this claim of her family does not seem to be convincing.
Secondly, according to the writing girl in Cassandra’s painting clearly resembles the face of Austen. Even though the painting is of adult Austen the details such as her eyes, mouth, body shape as so on are exactly similar to teen Austen. The speaker on other hand points out that since Austen had extended family there were many female cousin who were of same age. So, there is a probability that the girl could resemble any one of them. In addition, there has been evidences that two of her niece looked like Austen. Hence, the girl in the painting might portray any one of her.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that the even though the date and name of painter is anonymous the style of painting exactly matches with the artist Austen faimily would hire. Not only this, the painter used to actively painting during the period when Auten was in her teens. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that stamp on the black canvas shows that painting was not sold prior to her teen age. Similarly, the artist began to sell her portrait when she was 27 years old. Thus, it is clear that the girl in the painting is not Austen.
As we can see, the author and lecturer holds conflicting views on proving girl in the painting as Austen . The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
