Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they oppose specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading and the lecture reveal contradicting views toward altruism. The author insists that humans and many animals show altruism behaviors because they sacrifice own interests for others. However, the lecturer counters the argument by saying that the suggested examples are wrong since they actually gain benefits from the behaviors.
First of all, the author insists that a meerkat who serves as a sentinel for the group acts based on altruism because one goes without food while the others eat. On the other hand, a recent study reveal that the sentinel already full when standing as a guard. In this regard, the reading's first point cannot support its claim that a sentinel gains nothing.
The professor also rebuts the reading passage's second point a sentinel meerkat places itself in danger alone by giving others an alarm. In contrast, the sentinel is not in greater danger than the others because they can easily escape into immediate burrow. In addition, the sentinel is less vulnerable to attacks since the group readily draw predator's attention away from the caller.
Lastly, while the writer mentions the existence of donations in the human society is the clear evidence that there are altruistic behaviors in humans, the speaker refutes the contention. According to the speaker, a donator gains appreciation, approval of others and increased self-esteem, thus the donation is hardly deemed as totally a self-sacrifying, altruistic behavior.
