TOEFL integrated writing: Altruism.

The reading passage claims that Altruism is an act that is done out of selflessness and brings number of examples to support this point. However, the lecturer disagrees with points in the passage.
The passage says that meerkats, which stand on guard while other group members look for food, perform a selfless act. The lecturer refutes this point by mentioning a newer study, which has discovred that the meerkats that stand guard are usually already well fed, while others have to scavange what they can. Therefore, the guard meerkats are in a better position in some ways.
Another point made in the passage is that when the meerkats that stand guard sound an alarm, they put themelves at greater risk, since they are alone and far from the group. However, the lecturer also disagrees with this point. A different study found that meerkats that stand guard are usually close to borrows and thus can get to the shelter quickly after sounding the alarm. In addition, large group of meerkats usually attract the attention of the predator as well. Thus meerkats on the guard duty can be safer than those in the group.
Finally, the lecturer also claims that altruistic acts performed by humans mentioned in the passage, might not be selfless at all. She states that a family member that gives their organ for someone else does in fact recieve some imaterial benefits, such as apretiation or increased self worth.
