The reading passage discusses the fact that people are reading less literature than they did in the past. The lecturer opposes the reading passage by presenting alternative ways to acquire culture.
Even though it’s true that people are reading less literature, the professor states that there are more intellectually stimulating books, such as science, history and political analysis. She explains that these kinds of books can be as well-written and creative as literary ones. This information directly contradicts facts presented in the reading.
It’s also a fact that there is a preference for superficial and easy books nowadays, but the professor claims that other non-lyrical sources of culture are also valid, such as complex movies or good music. She assumes that people are reading not only less about literature, but in general. Although, she argues that listening to a brilliant song, for instance, does not lower cultural standards. It might also speak more directly to contemporary concerns than literature does.
Literature has less support nowadays, but the lecturer summarizes this as a consequence of having unnecessary complex structures. Because of that, it’s evident that talented writers will lack audience. Also, she enlightens that we can’t be sure if the earlier generations of readers would read a lot of today’s literature either, as culture changes over time.
