The speaker disputes the author's suggested theory that Chevalier's memoir about his life adventures was not accurate. She provides several reasons to cast doubt about the author's claims.
First, according to the text Chevalier was not a rich person because he borrowed money from a wealthy merchant to cover his debts. However, the lecturer finds this idea debatable. She indeed believes that Chevalier was a wealthy person because he had lots of properties. She contends that he had to borrow some money temporarily before he cash out the money from the selling transactions.
Second, the lecturer contradict the fallacy of the passage that since the memoir were written several years after the conversation between Chevalier and Voltaire, it is very unlikely that Chevalier remembers the details of the conversation and write it down accurately. However, the lecturer disputes these claims. According the lecturer Chevalier was always taking notes of the conversation that took place with Voltaire. Thus, he was only copying the details from his notes.
Finally, the author argues the Chevalier did not escape from prison in Italy. She believes that Chevalier had some contact with politicians who helped him to be released. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that it is highly possible that Chevalier did escape. She contends that other prisoners had contact with politicians yet, they were not able to escape. Moreover, the prison's guards confirm the presence of a hole in the ceiling right after Chevalier's escape.
