The reading passage mentions the critic’s doubts on the validity and reliance of facts described in the memoir written by Chavelier and states corresponding instances and reasons. The professor, however, refutes each of those doubts by providing counter arguments and explanations to corresponding reasons and is indeed confident of the memoir’s reliance.
To begin with, the professor mentions that even though Chavelier has taken a loan from a merchant while in Switzerland, this mere loan does not imply him being poor. As an evidence, he underscores the point that Chavelier has spent lot of money on parties and he had to sell his assets to procure this large amount money which naturally requires time. So this loan is just to make up for that time delay. Hence, this explanation overrules the claim by the reading passage saying Chavelier was poor.
Further, the reading passage argues about the memoir's record of Chavelier's conversation with Voltaire as improbable since it is difficult to remember the details of the conversation as the memoir was written much later. The professor offers to reconcile this argument by mentioning that Chavelier has habit of maintaining a notes. The professor goes to mention that Chavelier has indeed written down the conversation in this notes just that night it has happening and later consulted it while writing the memoir. Additionally, many of Chavelier's friends confirm the notes keeping habit of Chavelier.
Finally, the professor brings in the fact that many other prisoners in the Venice prison have more influential contacts than Chavelier had and yet none of them have managed to escape the prison by bribing the officials. Henceforth, it can be agreed that Chavelier haven't taken this path to escape. Furthermore, one of the Venetian Governments documents indeed mention that, after Chavelier’s escape, they had to repair the ceiling of the cell that held him, why else would they need to repair it unless he has escaped the same way as described in the memoir, i.e, by making a hole in the ceiling?
