The author of the passage believes that genetically modified trees bring about several merits to us. The lecturer, however, has the opposite point of view. She explains why the author is not right about his points.
First, the author states that genetically modified trees are more enduring, and therefore, their survival rates are higher than those of normal trees. On the contrary, the lecturer argues that while among natural trees there are always few individuals who survive any given condition, genetically modified trees may not survive an unidentified condition, providing that they are all similar to each other.
Second, the author asserts that since genetically modified trees grow faster, and yield more products, they are more efficient economically. On the other hand, the lecturer postulates that not only genetically modified tree seeds are more expensive, but it is also obligatory to pay the seed producer company every time you want to plant new seeds produced by your own trees.
Finally, the author suggests that planting genetically modified trees help preserve endangered natural trees. In contrast, the lecturer contends that genetically modified trees compete with natural trees in the area in which they grow. Since these trees use resource more aggressively, they deplete all resources. As a result, natural trees are endangered by genetically modified trees.
