TPO-22 Integrated essay
Reading and professor discusses about usefulness of ethanol guel as substitute for gasoline. Reading states that
ethanol that is produced from sugar and corn is not convincing source of energy. While, lecture thinks that
ethanol is very efficient as a fuel by providing following reasons:
First, reading states that excessive use of ethanol may produce green house gases and exacerbate effect
of global warming. However, reading sates that both gasoline and ethanol produce carbondioxide and increase concentration of harmful gases in atmoshpere. Lecture cast doubt on point made in reading. He says that indeed cardondioxide is released in the atmosphere in the process of burning ethanol, but plant counteracts this phenomenon. In addition, he points that plan inhale cardondioxide and help in reducing its concentration from atmosphere.
Second, reading states that number of plants may drastically be affected in the formation of ethanol. In addition, he points
out that animals such as cows and chicken may not have enough available food to survive. This statement is challenged by
the professor. He denies that by saying ethanol is formed from the cellulose part of plant. Furthermore, he states that
this animals will still have enough source of food as they do not feed on plants containing cellulose.
Third, reading claims that cost of ethanol is very high as compared to gasoline. Furthermore, reading states that if
government diminish tax subsidiary on production of ethanol, then no one can afford to buy that. In contrast, lecture
states that increase in production of ethanol can certainly cut down prices. In addition, he claims that
prices may plummet to 40% less if production increase three times. As a result, lecture successfully casts doubt on
arguments made in reading.
