According to the given set of reading the passage, it is the author's conviction that the yellow cader, which is a prevalent tree in northwestern North America, have begun to reducing in numbers due to several highlighted reasons. However, the lecturer casts doubt on this claim and refutes each of the author's specific point by giving some counter-arguments that are as follows:
First of all, the reading passage holds the view that the reduction of this specific tree is because of the fact that the wood of this tree is invaded and consumed by some particular insects. On the contrary, the lecturer finds this reason unconvincing and asserts that this tree is more resistant to this kind of invasions. He mentions that there is a specific saturated chemical on the leaves of this tree which is poisonous to insects. As a result, this powerful chemical is a shield against insects attack.
Secondly, although the author posits that bears feed on this tree due to the existence of a huge amount of sugar within it, the lecturer rejects this idea too. He explains that yellow cedar declination is extended to the main island of northwestern of North America which there is no brown bear in this area. Thus, the bears are not responsible for decreasing of these trees.
As the last point to emphasize the reading claim, the author says that climate variation is another reason that has an important role on the weakness of root system. Yet again, the lecturer states on the opposite side and contradicts that a great reduction of these trees has been observed on the lower elevations. He also adds that the frigid temperature in higher elevation is relevant to the killing of these trees but most of the died trees are in warmer areas. Therefore, climate fluctuations cannot explain this decline.
