TPO-26 - Integrated Writing Task The zebra mussel, a freshwater shellfish native to Eastern Europe, has long been spreading out from its original habitats and has now reached parts of North America. There are reasons to believe that this invasion cannot b

The reading and the lecture discuss the threats that Zebra Mussel, a freshwater shellfish which lives in Eastern Europe, invasion can cause to other fishes. The author of the reading passage presents three reasons to claim that the invasion of zebra mussel fish is unstoppable. However, the lecturer believes none of the reason could strongly explain that the invasion of the zebra mussel fishes is not treatable.

The author argues that the zebra mussels speared across freshwaters is unstoppable due to the ballast water, the water that ship needs to take on the required balance in its weight. The lecturer argues against this claim and believes that there are ways to stop this. For example, ships can be required to empty their freshwater and fill it up with ocean water across the ocean. Therefore, no zebra mussels could transport by the ships to new freshwaters.

Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that zebra mussels can be dominant in their new habitats for some reasons such as; high rate of reproduction, well adaptation criteria, and absence of predators. Nevertheless, the lecturer illustrates that these situations are present only in the beginning. In addition, by introducing zebra mussels in new habitats, other fishes recognize them as a potential source of food. Besides, they change their feeding habits and start to hunt zebra mussels. Moreover, birds can eat zebra mussels. Consequently, there are conditions that limit the zebra mussels population.

Finally, the reading asserts that invasion of zebra mussels causes a decline in overall fish population. The lecturer opposes this point by explaining that some fish species benefit from zebra mussels. Moreover, zebra mussels bring nutrition to the bottom of the rivers. Furthermore, fishes which live and feed on the bottom of the river can use these nutritions and raise population. Accordingly, also zebra mussels cause a decline in the population of some fish species, but they cause an increase in the population of other species as well.
