TPO 28

The passage and the lecture argue whether Perry's expedition to the North Pole was true or not. The reading presents three reasons that support Perry's claim. Whereas, the professor disagrees with these reasons and explains his arguments against them.

First, the passage mentions a committee that investigated Perry's records and equipment. The committee was persuaded that Perry had reached the pole. However, the lecturer states that although there was a committee that was convinced about this expedition, the committee wasn't trustworthy because their investigation wasn't objective. Besides, all of them were close friends of Perry who have a large contribution to the money that he gained.

Second, the reading claims that Perry had reached the North Pole through 37 days. However, the professor doubts with this idea because although a British explorer made the same trek in less than 37 days by using similar equipment, the professor claims unlike Perry, Tom Avery didn't transfer food. Indeed, his food was transferred by airplanes. Thereby, he transferred less weight through his sled. Also, unlike Perry, he has traveled in a favorite air condition.

Third, the reading claims that there are some photos which had taken by Perry and they can prove his travel to the North Pole. However, the lecturer argues with this idea and points out that the photos don't prove anything. Indeed, they belong to 100 years ago in which they were taken by a primitive camera. Therefore, because of the low quality of photos, shadows are blurry and we cannot be confidents about them.

Although the reading presents three reasons to support Perry's claim, the professor disagrees with them and explain why these reasons didn't convince him.
