The reading and lecture both discuss if the peary reached the North Pole or not. While the reading provides three claims to support the idea that Peary reached the North Pole, the professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.
Firstly, the reading avers that the National Geographic Society committee agreed that Peary reached the North pole after their investigation. However, the professor argues this notion by saying that the National Geographic committee declared that Peary indeed reached the Pole, but this is not completely objective. Moreover, this committee had his friends. So, they got money to support this trip. Furthermore, the committee was just for two days which is not enough time to evaluate this trip carefully. As a result, this committee is not trustful.
Secondly, the article mentions that there are many new expedition that support that Peary reached the Pole in 37 days as Avery who made the same trip in less than 37 days with the same tools. On the other hand, the professor questions this point by explaining that Tom's trip is completely different. For instance, Avery had less wight through his trip. This is because he had not food with him, the food dropped off from the plane. Also, he had a highly good condition. So, Avery's trip is different than Peary's trip.
Finally, the article states that the photographs that taken by Peary avers that the sun's position in that photo is the same sun's position at the Pole. So, the photo had been taken when Peary was there. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this idea by pointing out that this measuring is not accurate. Furthermore, this measures depend on shadow that was not precise. the photo was so fugue and faded. So, it is so hard to calculate the sun's position.
