TPO-31 - Integrated Writing Task
A fossil skeleton of a Sinosauropteryx have been found in LIaoning,China in 1996 between volcanic ash, and this dinosaur fossil suggests that Sinosauropteryx had feathers because there are some pattern of lines in the skeletal bones. The article suggests that these lines are not a good evidence of feathers and brings reasons for that. On the other hand the professor strongly thinks these evidence are very strong proof for feathers.
First, the article says that the lines are some structure that were formed after the death of the animal, and maybe its skin has turned to fibers that became preserved as lines in the fossil; however, the speaker thinks the lines are not made due to decomposition because other fossils in that area also do not have evidence of decomposition, beside that fossils are very well conserved so it can not be any mistake in the examination.
Second, the article writes that these lines are an indicator of frills, an ornamental fan-shaped structure growing out of some parts of Sinosauropteryx body, but the lecturer says that frills have different chemicals from feathers, and experiments suggest that the lines have beta cartin which is an element found in feathers not in frills.
Third, in the passage we read that feathers are useful just to help the animal to fly or to regulate its internal temperature, and the lines found in the fossil are located in the tail and backbone of the animal which is irrelevant to noted functions of feathers; however, the professor says that there are other functions for feathers like some animals use it to attract the opposite sex to mate, and this is called display function. The evidence from the fossil suggests that the feathers were orange and white which are colors used for display function purpose.
