TPO 32 integrated writing
The reading and the lecture are both about the cause of the strange sounds named quackers. The author of the reading feels that there are three possible explanations for the weird sounds. The lecturer challenges the claims made by author. She is of the opinion that these explanations are faulty.
To begin with, the author argues that the sounds made by Orca whales. The article mentions that when the male whale attracting mates in their habitats where Russian submarines patrolled. However, this specific arguments is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that the whales lived near the surface of the place rather than the deep ocean where the submarines stayed and detected the sound. Additionally, she says that the Orca whales moved close to the submarines, so the detector would have detected its’ sound.
Secondly, the writer suggest the giant squids make this odd sound. In the article, it is said that the giant squid have complex brain to be able to make frog like sounds. The lecturer, however, rebates this by mentioning the giant squid could not show up in one decade and disappear next decade. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that the record showed this evidence is contradicted to the track of the giant squid.
Finally, the author posits that the detector discover secret submarine from other country. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is it is impossible to detect other sounds from other submarines. She notes that the sounds would change quickly and fast, it could not be the sounds of the marines. She thinks the sounds may be an engine noises.
