The reading and the lecture are both about whether a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur or not. The author of the reading feels that Sinosauropteryx there are three possible explanations that Sinosauropteryx had not feather. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that these explanations are faulty.

To begin with, the author argues that the scientists misread the fossil. The article mentions that the line was decomposition of skin into fibers after the animals died. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that the animal’s skin would not turn into decomposition . Additionally, he says when the animals covered by the volcano ash, and the Sinosauropteryx have good evidence of well-preserved of feathers.

Secondly, the writer suggests the remains of fossil look like frills, not feathers. In the article, it is said that many scientists cannot know where the certain part of frills in dinosaur’s body. The lecturer, however, rebates this by mentioning the difference chemical components between feathers and frills. He elaborated on this by bringing up the point that the feathers have plenty of protein and some special materials which are also founded in Sinosauropteryx.

Finally, the author posits that the fine lines were in the animals’ backbone and tail. Moreover, it is stated in the article that the fine lines are not helpful for flight. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is the feathers have different function like display, not only for flight. He notes that peacocks have colorful feathers on their tail for attracting their mates.
