The passage and the lecture are both about whether humpback whales navigate by stars. However, the lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. He believes that none of the arguments is accurate.

First, the author notes that humpback whales have high intelligence to be able to navigate by using stars. Yet, the lecturer disagrees with his claim. He points out that there is no real connection between intelligence and the use of star to navigate. Moreover, the lecturer takes ducks for an example. He proposes that ducks also use stars to navigate, but their intelligence is average. He thinks that humpback whales could use stars to navigate is instinct action. Therefore, it is unlikely that humpback whales could navigate by stars.

Secondly, the passage establishes the fact that humpback whales use external items like stars to keep them on their straight lines for long travel. On the contrary, the lecturer argues that humpback whales use Earth magnetic to maintain their direction. He thinks humpback whales’ brains have bio-magnetic factor to feel the direction rather than rely on stars. In other words, stars could not have been humpback whales’ navigation.

Finally, in the article, it was said that humpback whales do spy-hopping is to find and see the stars for navigating. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by highlighting that another animal like sharks could also do the same behavior. Nonetheless, sharks do spy-hopping is to hunt. The lecturer considers that humpback whales sometimes do spy-hopping at daytime without stars. Hence, there is no reason to believe that humpback whales could navigate by stars.
