TPO-33

The reading proposes three theories to explain why Steller’s sea cows which used to live off the coast of Siberia became extinct in 1741.

Although the sea cows were a good source of good for Siberian people, according to which the author believes that the extinction is caused by over-hunting by local people. The professor casts doubt about this theory. Sea cows are massive creatives with nine meters long and over 10 tons in weight, and a couple of them could feed small number of Siberians for months. Since the number of people in the village is small, they might hunt some of them, but they do not have to hunt a lot of them.

The professor argues that if, as the author claims, the kelp, the main source of food for sea cows decreases due to the ecological change, the other sea animals like whales are supposed to be affected as well. However, the fishing ships have not recorded any decline happening in this area, indicating that other factors maybe to blame.

Despite the consistency in terms of the time when the sea cows became extinct and the time when traders came, the professor argues that traders is less likely to be the cause. The reason is that by the time European traders came to the island, the population of sea cow was already very small. Based on the showed record, there was a time that the animal was at its peak in number hundreds of year’s ago, and there must have been something serious happened or happening that decreased the population of sea cows.
