TPO-33 - Integrated Writing Task

The reading passage brings up three theories about the usage of carved stone balls, artifacts found at Scotland. However, the lecturer contends that these theories are unconvincing and refutes each of them.

First, the article argues that these balls have been used for hunting or fighting. The professor casts doubts on this point by saying that since the surface of these artifacts has been successfully preserved, this theory is unlikely to be true. Because if they were used for such purposes like fighting or hunting, they had to be damaged, cracked or broken off.

Second, the passage explains that the balls were used to measure and weigh objects. In contrast, the professor posits that these stones were generally made up from some stones like sandstone, greenstone, and courtside. Although some of them had a uniform size, their weight differed from each other depending on the type of stone they were made of. Some of them were denser and heavier than the others. So they were not an appropriate metric to be used as measure system.

Third, the reading makes a point that the discovered stone balls symbolized their owner's social status. On the contrary, the professor rejects this claim by explaining that the theory is incompatible with some evidence. First, the design of some ball stones was so complicated while others were simple. Extremely simple to be a sign of their owner's social status. Furthermore, in the Neolithic period, when someone died, specifically a renowned person, he was buried with his possessions. Since not any trace of these stones was found in their graves, the theory is unlikely to be true.
