TPO-33 - Integrated Writing Task

The author of the reading passage and the professor both discuss the carved stone balls. The author expresses that there are several theories which explain the purpose and meaning of the carved stone balls. However the professor challenges with the ideas mentioned in the reading passage. She offers several reasons to oppose the arguments of this article.

First, the author claims that the stone balls were weapons used in hunting and fighting because some of them have been found with holes in them and many have grooves on the surface. by contrast, the professor argues that if the stone balls had been used in hunting and fighting, the stone would have had some kind of cracks on the surface. However, the stone balls seemed to have been well preserved. So the professor thinks that the stone balls could not have been used for hunting and fighting.

Secondly, the author expresses that the stone balls might be used as part of a primitive system of weights and measures since they are almost uniform in size. In the contrary, the professor contends that although they are uniform in size, their mass varies considerably. The stone balls actually are made from different types of stone, which lead to different density. Thus, the professor concludes that the stone balls might not be the weighing system.

Thirdly, the author indicates that the stone balls could serve a social purpose instead of practical and utilitarian one because most of the stone balls have exquisite designs. Nevertheless, the professor points out that most of the exquisite designs are extremely simple. They are too simple to be served as the social purpose. Besides, when ancient people died, usually those people with a high ranking, others would put the valuable assets to their tombs or graves. However, none of the stone balls is found in the tombs and graves. This suggests that the stone balls might not serve a social purpose.
