The reading and lecture are about the possible explanations about how the sea cow extincted. In the passage, three possible interpretation that were challenged by the lecturer, was mentioned.
To begin with, the author states that Siberian people probably exterminated the sea cow in order to take advantage on the appropriate food supply, the sea cow. The lecturer is the opinion this hypothesis is faulty because the sea cow is so massive that few of them can provide enough food. Moreover, the body of native Siberians were not much such that they need to hunt magnitude of the creature.
Secondly, it is stated that modification of ecosystem caused kelp to decline in extent. For this reason, the sea cow extincted because of the lack of food. Nonetheless, the lecturer states that if change of climate had been so harsh that it affects the kelp, other species such as whales would have experienced difficulties. Actually, the body of whale was not went through decrease, which proves that shift of temperature was not that relentless. Therefore, kelp was not influenced and diminished by climate change, which means this is not factor of extinction.
Finally, the author posits that European fur sellers hunted the last sea cow and had advanced weapon which is suitable for hunting big amount of animals. Thereby, they might posed annihilation by fishing the creature. By contrast, the lecturer refutes this idea by mentioning that body of the species had been small by the time when Europeans came to the place. Furthermore, the sea cow had been existing for a long time before the eighteenth century, in which the creature extincted. Therefore, hunting for fur cannot be solid explanation of the extinction since it had already gone through the decrease of population.
