The reading and the lecture are both about the possible reasons behind the declination of Steller's sea cow from Bering Island. The author of the reading suggests three possible reasons for this extinction. However, the professor refutes all ideas claims in the readings, and provides possible alternate reasoning of those hypotheses.
First of all, the author posits that since the native of Siberian people need food in and faced food shortage due to the harsh environment, they might have hunted sea cows for fulfill their basic food need, and this might be the responsible for the cows population declination. The professor rebuts this point and says that the sea cow was so massive size; they were about 9m long and 10 ton, and the Siberian population was not so large enough to eat up all of the sea cows. Therefore, Siberian population was not the main problem of this massive extinction.
Secondly, the reading mentions that before 1768 a severe environment change had occurred which lead sea cows' population decrease as food was so scarcity in that time. However, the lecturer challenges this hypothesis, and notes that if such harsh environment existed in that time period, there must have a bad impact on other animals like whales, but the fisher ship's never report anything like that. So, no such critical situation was occurred and ample amount of food for sea cows was available.
Finally, the writers points out that since the fur traders caught the last sea cow, they might have involving some extreme hunting like use of weapon, and caught all the sea cows. The professor, on the other hand, contends that the European fur traders was in the last point of the declination of sea cows, and they were not the reason for the whole population of sea cows reduction. He further mentions that as the process of reduction of sea cows was started long age before European Trader came to this areas, alternate possible reasons should find out.
