The article discusses three theories about the main reason of the extinction of Steller's sea cow in Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. The professor indicates that even today scientists don't know the main cause of their extinction, and refutes each of the article's theories.
First, the article claims that sea cows might have been haunted in large numbers by native Siberian people. The professor states that this is highly unlikely because sea cows are massive creatures. They are about nine meters long, and they have at least ten tons of weight. He states that a couple of sea cows could feed an entire village of native Siberians in a month. Thus, the Siberians didn't need that much of sea cow hunting to provide their food.
Second, the article states that the sea cows might have become extinct because of ecosystems disruptions causing a decline of kelp population; a type of sea plant that is their primary food resource. The professor disagrees and says that if there were ecosystem disturbances in that time, it should have affected other types of animals experiencing food shortages; such as whales that are still present in that area. But there are no evidence or report of that phenomena on other animals; which means that this theory is out of order as well.
Finally, the article debates that it might have been Europeans fur traders who caused the extinction of sea cows; after they came to the island in 1741. The professor refuses this point as well and argues that when Europeans came to the island, the sea cows population were already declining from hundreds of years ago. Therefore, the main reason is still undetected and the European couldn't caused the sea cows extinction.
