One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. When turtles get accidentally caught in the nets, they cannot rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe, and they die. Some people suggest that this problem can be solved through an invention called a turtle excluder device (TED) that is incorporated into the nets. A TED provides a passage through which the turtles can escape. However, TEDs have been criticized for several reasons.
The reading passage and the lecture both discuss the advantage and disadvantages of ted for protecting og turtules. In the reading part, the author mentions that ted expresses as an useful tools for saving turtles, because of the demerits of it, it has critisized for several reasons; in the listening part. however, the professor challenges what the author states and refuts the reasons.
To begin with, as mentioned in the article, the author sets forth that some shrimpers argues that using the teds are costly for them; nevertheless, in the listening part, the speaker flatly refutes this aiea asserting that thousends shrimoers accidentally attack turtles and they cannot protect them. Indeed, it
would be a a big problem for enviroments, although in the scale of the damages to individual shrimpers is not anything. it means that it would has a seliant cost for turtles rather that some shrimpers.
Secondly, the author points out that the shrimpers can shortage the time of the shiping, which had less effect on turtulles. Nonetheless, the lecturer flatly contradicts the reasons and contendes that in theory it might worke, whereas, the the government cannot monitor them and use of the teds would be more bether and make sure the to do not harm species.
Finally, the author claims that the teds are not usfull for larger ones, they can not scape from the nests. In contrast, the professor is of the opinion that it is not aproblem, becaise of the intriding the the bether teds, which can modify easily and solve this issue. therefor, it cannot be longer proble,
