The reading and the lecture both are discussing permanent residence on Venus. The reading finds this idea impossible due to three reasons. Nonetheless, the lecture proposes a solution to all the mentioned drawbacks. The professor believes establishing a floating station fifty kilometers above the ground will be useful for this purpose. He then refutes the author's points using this proposal.
First, the reading states no human or human-made equipment cannot tolerate Venus' surface pressure. However, the professor opposes this point by mentioning that fifty kilometers above the surface of venus presses as much pressure as the earth's surface does, and people are used to it. So, the first problem proposed by the author is overturned.
Second, the reading avers that Venus' surface and atmosphere suffer from lack of oxygen and water. Then he states in order for people to satisfy these basic necessities, they have to import those substances from the earth, which is impractical. On the contrary, the professor explains that using the carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid in Venus' ecosystem, humans can make minerals like oxygen and water, since both of the mentioned substances contain hydrogen and oxygen with which water and oxygen necessary for breathing can be fabricated. Hence, the second point of the author is debuted.
Third, the reading mentions the lack of sunlight in Venus as another unpleasant characteristic. But the professor contends by stating that by building a floating station, they can pass the thick atmosphere of Venus, and the solar plates can get a decent amount of sunlight. In fact, they get sunlight both from the sun itself and reflected rays from underneath, thick clouds above which lies the station. This way, the third point of the author is not valid, as well.
