In the United States, medical information about patients traditionally has been recorded and stored on paper forms. However, there are efforts to persuade doctors to adopt electronic medical record systems in which information about patients is stored in electronic databases rather than on paper. It is argued that storing patients' medical records in electronic databases has several advantages over traditional paper-based record keeping.
The reading and lecture are both about electronic medical record system. The author of the reading feels that electronic database has several advantages over the traditional system. The lecturer challenged the claim made by the author. He is on the opinion that benefits are actually uncertain.
To begin with, the author argues that electronic formate will reduce the cost of storing and transferring record. He also claims that doctors can easily access the records and can transfer and copy the records when necessary. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He mentions that it will not probably save the money because they need paper records for the backup. He also additionally says for authentication required signature of the doctor, thus paper record must be kept.
Secondly, the author suggests that electronic records help to reduce the error due to the unclear handwriting and improper data. He also states this will help to increase the medical condition of some of the patients. The lecturer rebuts this by mentioning that most of the doctor still used paper for prescribing to the patients. He also mentions that stuff related to this work may cause an error when they transfer the written document to the electronic formate.
Third, The author posits that in paper-based sometimes it is difficult to keep a record of thousands of patients. He elaborates this by mentioning that an electronic database can easily accessible from anywhere. In contrast, the lecturer position is that research shows that maybe some privacy issue is connected with the records, He adds that sometimes doctor needs to ask permission of the patients to the access the data and also the doctor cannot access the patient's record until they open the access from blocked mode
