The article and the lecture are contradicting each other, in terms of the desalination project in order to reduce salt proportion in the Salton sea lake. More specifically, the penman of the article provides three theories to prove that possibility of desalination from lake water is desirable. However, the lecturer negates the arguments presented in the passage and provides some evidence to refute them.
According to the article, the first dispute focuses on the fact that saltwater can be eliminated through a desalination system in which the lake’s water converts into the steam by heating process, and lateron, when it is cool down, the freshwater could be restored. besides, in this whole process, salt and other materials are left behind. Nonetheless, the speaker rebutes this stating that even though fresh water can be obtained through the process, materials which stay back with salt could have detrimental effect on human health. Thus, this idea is not acceptable.
Moreover, another point of debate highlights that combining ocean water with the lack water to reduce salinity. Nevertheless, the lecturer negates this by asserting that the nearest ocean spot is distant enough from the lake, and therefore, constructing pipelines or canals requires a significant amount of resources for the local government.
Finally, the last text exaplains that salinity can be evidently reduced by building wall and separating lake into many devisions. On the contrary, the professor undermines this point and describes that constructed wall could be easily deteriorated by geological activities such as a major earthquick which leads to mixing up water in the lake again. Thus, this step in illogical according to the lecturer.
