The reading and the lecture are both about the benefits or possibilities of using a new-invented box-shaped device to help grow trees in deserts to prevent desertification. Whereas according to the reading, some scientists believe that this method can't be successful to maintain the trees in harsh conditions and bring three reasons for support, the lecturer refutes each of the reasons and states that the proposed idea can be efficient.
To begin with, according to the passage the opposing scientists state that using this device for each tree is very expensive and out of the ability of some poor countries. However, the lecturer disputes this statement. She mentions that each tree needs a water-collecting device just during the early stages of growth. To explain more, after the tree becomes big enough to stand the condition by its roots, they can remove the device to use it for another tree. So, this opportunity to reuse them make its usage more affordable. According to the lecture, this device even can be used more than twenty times.
Second, the reading claims that most of the people in places that are in danger of desertification, are poor and depend on other vegetation for food. So, persuading these people to take care of non-beneficial trees is difficult. Nevertheless, the professor opposes this point. She mentions that there can be other rewards for local people as motivation. For example, some extra devices should be given to farmers to use in their food-resource vegetations. In addition, after trees become grown enough, there will be more branches as firewood for locals.
Finally, the passage argues that the capability of the collecting device is limited and will not cover a fully-grown tree's need for water. On the contrary, the lecturer rejects this argument by saying that each tree needs surface-added water or irrigation when is small. In other words, during the growing period roots penetrate through the soil as far as that will be no longer dependent on water from the surface since the tree now has access to underground water in deep layers. For instance, she points out that more than 90% of trees planted in the Sahara still survived in very harsh and arid conditions.
