TPO 55 Integrated 22
The reading and the lecture are both about box-shaped devices used for fighting desertification. The author of the article states that some scientists believe that using these devices cannot be successful and provides three reasons to support this claim. In contrast, the lecturer believes that the reasons mentioned in the article are not very convincing and presents some counterarguments to cast doubt on the points mentioned in the passage.
To begin with, the author mentions that the cost of each device is 25 dollars, which is too expensive considering the fact that millions of trees should be equipped with such devices in order to have an impact. However, the lecturer points out that when trees grow bigger, they don't need those boxes. In addition, the boxes can be reused 20 times or more, which means that the costs will be completely reasonable.
Secondly, the author posits the locals work for long days in harsh conditions, so it might be hard to motivate them to look after trees, which bring no source of food for them. The speaker, however, refers that there might be some rewards in looking after trees for farmers. She notes that those boxes gather water, and farmers can use that water to use for other plants such as vegetables. In addition, when the trees grow, they can use their branches as firewood.
Finally, the reading mentions that each box provides only enough water to keep small trees alive. So, when the trees outgrow those devices, they will have to survive in harsh environments without the help of those boxes, which can be a difficult task. This specific point is challenged by the lecturer. She points out that trees can survive harsh conditions when they outgrow the boxes since they have long roots underground. When their roots reach water sources beneath the surface, they can supply their need without the help of boxes. Furthermore, she mentions that in a study done in the Sahara desert, scientists found out that around 90 percent of the trees that had outgrown those boxes were still thriving.
