The reading and the lecture are both about aspects that make Spartacus an appealing hero. The author of the article feels that there is evidence to ascertain Spartacus's brave records. However, the lecturer disputes the claims made in the articles. Her position is that the life stories given rely on inaccuracy.
According to the reading, people appreciated Spartacus because his original goal was to return to his homeland taken over by Rome. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that returning to her homeland was not their only goal. To be more specific. Spartacus's group marched into the city and took away many valuables. As a result, their goal was to take revenge and get wealth.
Secondly, the passage suggests that people admire Spartacus. It goes on to say that Spartacus formed an ill-equipped team to defeat the highly-trained Romans. However, the lecturer disputes this by saying that Spartacus was not a military genius. To elaborate, when the Roman military sent the larger and more well-trained troop than they had sent at the beginning of the fight. Spartacus's troop was defeated immediately.
Last but not least, the passage provides a theory that Spartacus sought to liberate slaves and command respect for human rights. Spartacus thus left a good impression on history. On the contrary, the professor contends that this is not true historical evidence. Furthermore, it was people in the anti-slavery movement that came up with this legend to inspire their members to fight for liberating slaves.
