TPO10 integrated writing

The reading and listening materials have a conflict of opinions about which can better explain the decline of sea otters, environmental pollution or predation theory. The author believes that it is the environmental pollution that causes this problem, which is contradicted by the following lecture.

For starters, the writer claims that there are some sources of pollution known by people while the professor views this issue from an opposite angle. According to her, actually people have not found dead sea otters washing off the beaches. That is, if this decline is due to contamination, it is strange that there is not any remnant of dead bodies. Yet, if the cause is predators, they would be eaten immediately, which could explain the absence of remnants.

In addition, the passage states that only environmental pollution can lead to entire drop. However, the speaker opposes this view by saying that because whales have been hunted by human, orcas are forced to change their diet. In this situation, the small sea mammals, such as sea lions and sea otters, who are available, become their alternative prey. Thus, small mammals population shrink as well.

Finally, the writer argues that the uneven concentration of pollutants accounts for the uneven pattern of decline. By contrast, in accordance with the professor, this opinion does not hold water. In fact, the uneven pattern is better explained by the predation theory. Sea otters are more likely to die in those locations that orcas can access easily. However, because orcas are so large, they cannot access shallow or rocky locations. And shallow and rocky locations are precisely the types of locations where sea otter populations have not declined.
