The lecture and the reading discuss the ways for stopping the spread of cane toads in Australia. The cane toads are native to America, and they have deliberately introduced to Australia in the past, but now it causes ecological problems in Australia. The writer states three proposed measures to remove cane toads from Australia. On the other hand, the lecturer raises doubt on these methods by providing her reasons. The detail of this contrast is explained in the following paragraphs.
First, the passage mentions that prevention of spreading cane toads would be achieved by building a national fence, and describes a similar previous experience with spreading rabbits in Australi. However, the speaker casts doubt on the feasibility of this approach, and claims that the eggs of cane toads and young ones commonly are in rivers and flowing streams. So they can go beyond the fence through these streams, and this method would not be helpful to prevent them from expansion in the other side of the fence.
Second, according to the text, the cane toad population could be controlled by employing volunteers to capture and destroy them. Conversely, the lecturer rejects this notion by stating that a huge number of hunters might be able to control cane toad increase, but the major problem with this method is that it would be difficult for an untrained hunter to distinguish the cane toads from Australian native frogs especially when both of the two species are young. So it might cause damage to native frogs.
finally, the article suggests that the researchers could produce a kind of virus to stop cane toads from maturation and fertilization. On the contrary, the professor thinks that this approach might end up terrible ecological consequences. The virus might be transmitted to American cane toad population by various means such as transferred toads from Australia to America by a researcher or pet collector. Since the cane toad is native to America, any threat to this species will adversely affect the whole ecosystem.
