Both, the reading and the lecture, talk about the influence that have had the human population increment, the agriculture, and the use of pesticides over the number of birds in the usa. The reading claims that they have affected them negatively and its effect will continue in the future. On the other hand, the professor explains that the arguments used in the text are questionable and refute each reason, casting doubts in the author's beliefs.
Firstly, the reading points out that the enlargement of the cities have destroyed birds habitats. However, the lecturer disproves this argument by saying that, the urban development does not affect all birds species. there are some species, such as falcons and hawks, that have prospered in the urban environment, due to the increment of their preys. Furthermore, there are others species that have adapted well to live in the cities. As a result, there is not a generalized declining of all species of birds.
Secondly, the text argues that, as a consequence of the rise in the human population, more lands will be used for agriculture, which reduce birds’ habitat. Nonetheless, the orator contradicts this argument by noticing the food demand increment will be covered using more productive crops, not with an expansion in the agriculture areas. moreover, the orator affirm that, actually, in the usa those areas have suffered a contraction over the years.
Finally, the reading remarks that, owing to the factors mentioned before, the pesticide utilization will increase too. Notwithstanding, the professor highlights the weakness of this point noticing that it is erroneous to project that assumption toward the future. The need of pesticide will fall thanks to the use of new and more resistant crops, which reduce the need of pesticide. moreover, in the future there will be a development of less toxic pesticide that won’t harm animals.
