What have been proposed in the reading passage are three assumptions arguing the different purposes and meanings of carved stone balls, while the lecturer counters these assumptions and claims the hypotheses could not be true.

It has been mentioned that the carved balls were used to be weapons, because there were holes which can let the cord strung through may allow a person to swing it around or throw it. This belief, however, fails to convince the lecturer who contends that the stone used for weapons were usually crack, but this craved ball were well preserved.

The next argument states that these balls were used as part of weights and measures system. Due to the size of the ball were uniform in size, the balls may be a standard of weight. This argument, however, is groundless because the density of stone which made these balls were different. Therefore, the mass of each stone was also different.

Lastly, the reading passage maintained that the balls were served as a social status of the owners, because many balls have elaborates designs on it. The speaker, however, counters again by saying that many balls were actually very simple. Besides, there was not any balls be found in the tomb of high status person, which means these balls could not have marked the important of a person.
