The author of the reading passage and the lecturor discuss whether the advantages of keeping medical information in electronic databases outweigh storing in paper-based record. The author expresses that electronic databases has several advantages over traditional paper-based record keeping. However, the lecturor casts doubts on these advantages and refutes each of the benefits the author provided by offering several counter-arguments.

Firstly, the author claims that using the electronic records can help reduce the costs by saving money on storing and transferring medical records. Nevertheless, the lecturor indicates that there is not any connection between saving money and the use of electronic records. For the reason that doctors still keeps the paper records, instead of throwing away everytime they finish diagnosing. So, they still have to pay for the storage. Therefore, the lecturor believes that the use of electronic records does not benefit the cost of hospitals because they still need to pay for the storage.

Secondly, the author mentions that electronic medical records can reduce the chances of medical errors. Nonetheless, the lecturor states that most doctors, also including those who adopted to the electronic record system, still use pen and paper to record patients' circumstances and prescription. It is usually the staff who then type those information into the electronic databases. Thus, the lecturor concludes that this cannot prevent medical errors since all doctors use pen to write down the information.

Finally, the author points out that electronic records can aid medical research in a significant way by gathering large amounts of data from patients records. On the contrary, the lecturor claims that the access of the patients' records are subject to privacy laws. Researchers have to follow the strict rules, and the permission of the records have to be approved by the patients. As a result, the lecturor stands that the electronic databases cannot help the medical research as they have to follow the privacy laws.
