Both the reading and the lecture talk about the decline or even extinction of frog populations. The reading proposes three methods to solve the problem; however, the professor in the lecture argues that none of them are practical.
Firstly, the reading claims that since pesticides can harm frogs, there should be laws to forbidden the use fo pesticides near sensitive frogs. However, the lecturer points out that it is not economic practical. If farmers follow the regulation, they are not able to prevent insects from damaging farm crops. As the result, they may lose their crops and yields of their farmlands can be reduced.
Secondly, the reading states that the decline of frog population is mainly caused by a fungus with deadly effect, so frogs who are infected can be treated with heat to kill the fungus. Nevertheless, the professor maintains that this kind of treaments need to be done to each individual frog, which causes it difficult to apply on a large scale. In the meantime, it is expensive and not practical since it has to be done again and again for each genration of frogs.
Finally, the reading argues that frog populations can be recovered by protect their natural habitats from excessive water use and dvelopment since this kind of human activities threathens their habitats, while the speaker casts doubt on it. She illustrates that the damage of habitats is not the biggest problem. Instead, the actual problem that leads frog population to decline is global warming, which causes disappearance of natural habitats for frogs. Thus, prevent human activties cannot solve the problem.
