In the reading passage, the author describes three possible problems associated with Mars missions. In the article, it is stated that due to the several constraints in a project of sending humans to Mars is almost impossible. However, the lecturer is of the opinion that the Mars mission is possible. He presented three possible solutions to the problems mentioned in the passage.
First of all, the author argues that there will be problems with food, water, and oxygen in the spacecraft as it takes 2 years to round the trip. However, the lecturer provided a possible solution to this problem. He says that hydroponic technology can be used in the spacecraft. Since it doesn't require soil to grow plants, so it will provide food for astronauts. Similarly, the water use in hydroponic can be recycled and used for drinking purpose. Furthermore, the oxygen released by the growing plants can be used for respiration purposes by an astronaut.
Secondly, the writer further mentions that astronauts have to spend a long period of time in space having zero gravity, which may result in a decrease in muscle and lower bone density, so it is quite difficult for an astronaut to live in space for a long period of time. The speaker points out possible solutions to this problem as well. Astronauts were moving to the Moon and other satellites for time to time, so they are accustomed to zero gravity. Moreover, exercise can be done to prevent a decrease in muscle and calcium and vitamins can be consumed to maintain bone density.
Finally, the writer says that there will be a problem with harmful radiation. He points out that there are so many harmful radiations in the space which cause serious harm to an astronaut. The writer proposes an alternative to solve this problem. He mentions that a small shield can be built. Since harmful radiations are released occasionally, astronauts can stay inside the shield chamber during the emission of harmful radiation and in the rest of time, they can do their own work. Hence, he believes that project of Mars missions is possible.
