The article introduces the topic of human's interests in elephants as the largest animal in today's world. More specifically, the writer discusses that they show several surprising behaviors. The lecturer in the listening passage disagrees. He thinks that these beliefs are based on misunderstandings of elephants actions and attacks each of the claims made in the reading.
in the reading, the author begins by stating that elephants can sense that their deaths are imminent, so they leave their herds and go lonely wherever is close to the water. The lecturer, however, disagrees. He states that it is not correct to assume that because, when they get old and weak, their teeth become useless and as a result of that they try to find soft vegetation which is usually found near the water and eventually die there.
The author also claims that elephants have artistic talent, some of them could paint drawing by using their trunks. Again, the speaker believes that there are flaws in the writer's argument, the lecturer holds that their ears are really sensitive. Thus, their trainers teach them how to draw and move paintbrush by touching their ears. Finally, these patterns are not alike flowers and animals these are just some lines.
Another reason why the author feels that some elephant's behavior are astonishing is that they have huge bodies but they are deeply afraid to face mice. The professor in the listening passage is doubtful that is accurate. He suggests that the reaction of elephants to mice was misinterpreted. Owing to lack of well-known mice cause them to react in this way which is based on a natural instinct. On the other hand, some of the elephants that live in the area near mice as zoos get familiar with them and do not respond with fear of the mice.
