The passage points out several beliefs of humans about surprising elephant behaviors. But the listening says that these beliefs are misunderstandings of elephant behaviors.
First, the reading suggests that elephants have awareness of their death. Elderly elephants break away from their herds and go off solely to the places which usually near the water and then they die alone. However, the professor refutes that people cannot assume that elephants know they will die soon just because they leave their herds. The old elephants' teeth are not in good condition. they have difficulties to chew food so they leave their families to find soft vegetation to eat. Moreover, this kind of vegetation often closes to the water. Thus, old elephants die nearby the water, which was called elephant graveyard.
Second, the article mentions that elephants can represent objects through art because they can hold paintbrushes and draw some recognizable things such as flowers and other elephants. Nevertheless, the listening disputes that elephants can paint due to the training by people. Since elephants' ears are very sensitive, people touch certain part of their ears to let them paint. In this case, elephants are able to remember the pattern of brushstrokes. Besides, people repeat these brushstrokes agin and agin by touching elephants' ears. As time goes by, elephants know how to draw the certain lines. Accordingly, elephants are not capable of representing things by art.
Finally, the reading says that elephants are afraid of mice rather than the animals that elephants normally share an environment through the writing of Pliny. A scientific experiment also shows when a herd of elephants faced with some mice, the elephants would back away and avoid mice. On the contrary, the listening notes that elephants back off because they are unfamiliar with mice instead of fear. this cautious behavior is known as natural instinct. For example, the elephants in the zoo do not show any fear of mice because they already familiar with mice and they know mice cannot do any harm to them. As a result, elephants are not scared of mice.
