In the reading material, the author cites three potential benefits if a new type of broccoli can be grown on the East Coast despite the hotter summer. Nevertheless, the lecture in the listening material argues that there is less need to grow this crop in the East and those benefits may not obvious as the article implies.
First and foremost, the author argues that growing this type of broccoli on the East Coast can lower the price for consumers by reducing the transportation cost. However, the lecture offers the opposite stand that the price advantage may be counteracted. The lecture admitted that the transportation cost can be reduced, however, this type of broccoli has a lower yield on the East Coast, which means farmers may have less harvest and they have to increase the price for them. This will lead to cancel out the price advantage brought by lower transportation costs.
In addition, the lecture casts doubt on the author's second opinion that this type of broccoli may be desirable for consumers than other crops created using genetic modification technology. The lecture demonstrates that the impressions on consumers are hard to adjust. If a company has created some genetic crops that are not welcomed by consumers, it will not be trusted by them, which further leads to the broccoli created using traditional techniques, also being rejected by consumers.
Finally, the author's third reason that these broccolis are healthiest to eat right after they are harvested because they retain most of their beneficial nutrients and vitamins, is also counteracted by the lecture who points out that local crops also contain these nutrients and vitamins.
There are different kinds of crops grown locally that also have similar components that the new type of broccoli has, and a kind of these local crops can also be cultivated in multiple seasons rather than in summer. It is a wise choice to eat those crops that are available locally.
