Both reading and lecture are about the author of a mysterious manuscript. The writer suggests three persons as the probable authors. Conversely, the lecturer believes that none of them can be the author of the book.
First, the passage asserts that Ascham, a botanist, is the book's author because of the similarities between his works and the manuscript. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes this claim. He believes that Ascham's books are too ordinary and his knowledge comes from other sources, and plants inside his books are common plants. Hence, he did not need to use these elaborated words in a coded way.
Second, the writer claims that Kelley, a person who was good at fooling people, made that manuscript with his own made-up words. Alternatively, the man in the lecture believes that people in the 16'th century were too naive that Kelley did not need to make that complicated book. If he was the author, he could have made a simpler book without so much work.
Lastly, the reading suggests that Vonyich, an antique book dealer, created a fake book as an old manuscript. On the other hand, the lecturer asserts that there are some modern techniques to examine the age of manuscripts nowadays. The ink and the paper used for the book are 400 years old. If Vonyich wanted to create a fake book, he could use some 400 years old papers from other manuscripts, but there is no way he could obtain 400 years old ink. Therefore, Vonich could not create the book.
