Summarize points made in the lecture and how it cast doubt pints made in the reading passage.
On February 15th, 1898, the USS Moline Sank of the coast of Havana, Cuba. More than two hundred and officers on board died as a result of an explosion, which many historians see as the catalyst to the ensuing Spanish-American War, waged between the United States and Spain.
While the cause of the blast is still unknown, we do not know that this was the first time the U.S. media asserted it's power over the American public in the effort to sway public opinion against the Spanish. Hours after sinking of the ship, journalist William Hearst's New York Journal created an anti-Spanish outcry by publishing the headline, The Worship Maine Split in Two By an Enemy's Secret Infernal Machine! Immediately, the American public began to blame Spain for the explosion, and the sensationalist, "yellow" journalism that Heart and fellow newsman Joseph Pulitzer had been perfecting for 10 years prior to the 1898 event, took up a powerful place in history.
Pulitzer and Hearst had already been reporting on events involving General Weyler, a Spanish general in Cuba, blowing them completely out of proportion. In one famous story, a Hearst replied, "You furnish the picture and I will furnish the war." This might seem overblown in today's world, but Hearst's papers had the power to influence public opinion in ways that no others had before him.
"Yellow journalism" is a term used to refer to journalism and newspapers that used provocative titles to attract attention, but very little factual data. "Yellow journalism" was not new in 1898, but it did a large role in ensuing public support for the Spanish-American War. Without the influence of Hearst and Pulitzer, who knows if the conflict would ever have come to pass?
The article states that on February 15th, 1898, the USS Moline Sank at the cost of Cuba that was the main reason for the war between the United States of America and Spain. Also, reading passage provides few reasons to support that idea. However, the professor explains that reason for snaking the ship was unknown. and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading passage claims that Journalist William Heart's New York journal spread the anti-Spanish news and because of that the American people started blaming Spain for the explosion on the ship. The professor refutes that point by saying that American media influenced people at curtain point, but the cause of the blast is still unknown. Moreover, war between the U.S. and Spain was not surely cause by the "yellow Journalism."
Second, the article posits that Hearst statements influenced public to cause war. However, the professor says that the U.S. actions prior to the war explains that it was planning war with Spain before the battleship sank. Politicians of the America was sure about presence of the European in their shores. Even they were suspecting trade threat at Caribbean.
Lastly, reading passage mentioned that "yellow journalism" played important role in the war. If newspaper not printed this new, then war might not happen. The professor opposes this point by explaining that the U.S. was preparing its superpower far before the newspaper printed this news. Even though press new influenced people at certain point, but war with the Spain would happen regardless of how it was represented in New York's newspaper.
