You have 20 minutes to plan and write your response. Your response will
be judged on the basis of the quality of your writing and on how well your response
presents the points in the lecture and their relationship to the reading passage.
Typically, an effective response will be 150 to 225 words.

The reading and the lecture are both about dinosaurs and present their opinions about dinosaurs being endotherms. While the author of the article argues that dinosaurs are endotherms and presents the reasons for saying so, the lecturer disputes the argument made in the article. Her position is that the three reasons provided for endotherms do not really add up to dinosaurs being endothermic as well.

According to the reading, the first main point of consideration is Polar dinosaurs , as it is stated that fossils found in the polar regions indicate that dinosaurs were endotherms because only animals that maintain a balanced inner temperature irrespective of the surrounding temperature can be active in such climate. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She argues that the polar regions during the period of dinosaurs were much warmer than they are today and hence dinosaurs could survive in these climates. She goes on to add that there are possibilities that even when the temperature of the polar regions turned cold, dinosaurs might have hibernated like any other reptiles or even migrated to warmer regions to avoid the cold.

Secondly, the author suggests that leg position and movement of legs has a connection with animals being endothermic. The physiology of endothermy allows sustained physical activity such as running, and running is only possible when legs are placed underneath the body of the animal unlike other reptiles such as crocodiles and many lizards. As legs of dinosaurs were underneath their bodies the authors concluded that they were indeed endotherms. The lecturer, however, asserts that the dinosaurs were not necessarily high energy runners and there can be other advantages for them to have their legs underneath their bodies. She goes to say that having legs below their bodies allowed them to carry the weight of the body and have a large size.

Finally, the author puts forth the idea that there is a connection between endothermy and haversian canals. The author contends that the haversian canals allow animals to grow quickly and rapidly. Thus the presence of these canals in the fossilized bones of dinosaurs is an indicator that they were endothermic. In contrast, the lecturer’s stance is that it is true that haversian canals are present in the bones of dinosaurs but growth rings are also present , which shows that bones were not growing at a certain period. She says that they grew slowly during the cooler periods, and this constant cycle between rapid and slow then again rapid growth in the dinosaurs indicated that they were not endothermic because endotherms grow rapidly at a constant rate.
