In this set of materials the article posits that the person in the famous painting of the Austen family is Jane Austen who was an English novelists. In this regard, it provides three reason of support. However the lecturer raise question on these ideas and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author of the reading passage states that Austen's family let publishers to use this painting on Jane's letters after her death and this fact proves that this portrait was her picture. On the contrast the professor refutes this point by saying that Jane was dead 70 years before that time. Moreover, the painter didn't see her, so this painting can't belong to Jane.
The next explanation uttered in the article is that face of the girl in the painting is very similar to the Jane's face. In contrast, the lecturer explains that Austen family had many young members in that time and all of them was similar to each other. Therefore, this painting can depict another girl in her family. According to the professor, this picture belongs to Marry Austen.
The last reason which is mentioned by author of the reading passage is that there are some evidence which indicates time of this painting was during Jane's life. Conversely, the speaker claims that other evidence such as staffs in the painting revealed other things. For example, William Austen bought the candle on the painting when Jane was older than the girl in the painting. So, the girl on the picture can't be Jane.
