TPO14 - INTEGRATED ESSAY
The reading and the lecture are both about salvage logging, which is removing deads trees from areas that affected by fire or severe storms and using them for industrial products. The author of the reading believs that it has many merits both to forest and the economy. The lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks this practice has more disadvantages than advantages.
First of all, the authors claims that salvage logging is useful for grown new trees and plants. He believes enough free space in the forest causes growing new trees. This point is challenged by the lecture. She says that removing dead trees is not useful for growing new plants. On the other hand, if we omit these trees we make the soil less nutrient and it is not good for new trees because soil of forest uses the dead tree to have more mineral materials.
Secondly, the authors states that dead trees is suitable place for harmful insects and if we do not allow salvage logging, we have real danger about the health of forest. This argument is rebutted by the lecture. She suggests, other birds and insects uses these decaying wood too, and they are useful for forsets. So these woods are not only the habitat for harmful insects. Furthermore, these insects usually exists in the forest and their existence are not because the being dead trees.
Finally, the author mentions that salvage logging has economic benefits such as more woods for industries that be affected by these disasters. He adds salvage logging can create additional jobs. The lecture, on the other hand, feels that it is not beneficial for industries because they need helicopter and other special vehicles that make this practice very expensive and it is not practical. Also, the idea of making new job is not true because this type of work is temporary and workers are out of local people.
