Greek weapon called a '' burning mirror
The reading claims that the Greeks did not have a weapon called ‘’Burning mirror’’ due to some reasons. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
The author argues that the Greek did not have enough technologies to produce such a weapon, as this mirror should be wide up to several meters, have parabolic curvature, and it should be made by a large sheet of copper. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that this reason is highly questionable due to the fact that there is no need to make this mirror from a single sheet. Instead, they could make it from a dozen peace of polished copper and assembled them to have a parabolic shape.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that the evidence shows that it takes a long time for a mirror to burn a wooden ship also the ship should be in the same position to be burned by this mirror. The professor underlines the fact that this argument is not convincing since although it is right that it takes 10 minutes for wood to be burned, Roman used a sticky material named pitch in making their ships to waterproof them, and this matter burns in just one second. As a result when the pitch burns the flame would spread to the other part of ships quickly as possible
Finally, the reading asserts that since the Greeks had flaming arrows which serve the same purpose as the burning mirror; hence, they had no need for this mirror. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that this mirror is much more effective since Roman did know the flaming arrows and can see them. Therefore, they prepared to cut down the fire caused by this weapon as soon as they could. In contrast, by using the burning mirror the Roman did not see the weapon so as to be prepared. The only thing that they encounter is a surprising fire which they did not know the exact source of it.
