Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as attributed to Rembrandt because of its style, and indeed the representation of the woman’s face is very much like that of portraits known to be by Rembrandt. But there are problems with the painting that suggest it could not be a work by Rembrandt. First, there is something inconsistent about the way the woman inthe portrait is dressed. She is wearing a white linen cap of a kind that only servants would wear-yet the coat she is wearing has a luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford. Rembrandt, who was known for his attention to the details of his subjects’ clothing, would not have been guilty of such an inconsistency.
Second, Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow, but in this painting these elements do not fit together. The face appears to be illuminated by light reflected onto it from below. But below the face is the dark fur collar, which would absorb light rather than reflect it. So the face should appear partially in shadow-which is not how it appears. Rembrandt would never have made such an error.
Finally, examination of the back of the painting reveals that it was painted on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together. Although Rembrandt often painted on wood panels, no painting known to be by Rembrandt uses a panel glued together in this way from several pieces of wood. For these reasons the painting was removed from the official catalog of Rembrandt’s paintings in the 1930s.
It may appear logical, at first glance, to agree with the reading passage that this painting was painted by someone else. The professor, however, argues that despite these supporting reasons in the reading are true, a new finding made by scientists can render that statement uneffective and unreliable. She points out that this painting proves to be one of Rembrandt's works.
In the first place, the reading states that there exists some inconsistence about the dress the women in the painting wears. Nevertheless, the professor offers some alternative explanations for that. She says that the inconsistent color was actually painted by someone else. After about 100 years when the painting was finished, someboday, rather than Rembrandt himself, added this on the originally painting and wished to add value to the painting. That is why the way the women dressed seems strange for us.
In the second place, the professor argues that the reason why the light and shadow do not fit each other is due to the fact that someone have modified the painting, too. According to the professor, in the priginal painting the collar was painted in a way that could reflect light. Therefore, it is quite reasonable for the women's face appear to be illuminated.
In the third place, the reading suggests that none of Rembrandt's painting, except this one, was found made of several wood panels. However, the professor also states that it is someone else wishing to add the value of the painting that add these extra panels. She even offers other evidence supporting that the painting was indeed painted by Rembrandt. That is, the original wood piece was found made from the same tree that other painting of Rembrandt painted. Thus, it seem clear that this painting is Rembrandt's work.
For the above reasons, the professor insists that the painting was made by Rembrandt.
