In this set of material, the article and the lecture disagree on the merit of whether the skeleton fossils of Sinosauropteryx dinosaur which preserved in the volcanic ash contained a regular pattern of lines which surrounded the bones of that extinct animal; actually, represents feathers or not. The reading passage states that some paleontologists think that dinosaur did not have feathers. In fact, those lines represented decomposed fibers of the skin, also could be frills, and the location of those lines are an inappropriate location for supporting fly to that animal. In contrary, the professor in the lecture challenges this theory. He presents three counterclaims proving that all the reading passage critics are skeptical. Following is a brief interpretation to this perspective.
First of all, the author claims that those fine lines probably decomposed skin formed after the death of that dinosaur when buried in the volcanic ash. However, the professor in the listening lecture refutes this suggestion. He believes that it is unlikely to find any decomposed skin fibers for other fossilized animals in the same location. In fact, they were well preserved, and all of their skin structure did not transform to fibers. Therefore, it was not strong evidence.
Second, the writer in the passage asserts that this dinosaur had some frills; ornamental; fan -shaped structures. Nevertheless, the lecturer rebuffs this idea, too. He pinpoints that the chemical structure of the frills is utterly different from the chemical structure of the feathers. Furthermore, after chemical analysis of those lines, the scientists discovered they formed from Beta, carotene protein which is the structure of the feathers, not the frills. Thus, it was not a very good suggestion from the writer.
Last but not the least, the reading passage argues that the location of those lines were in a position did not allow them to play any role or assistance for flying. Whereas, the professor opposes this argument and states that it is a necessary for those feathers to help that dinosaur in flying. He gave an example of the peacock bird which has wonderful, colorful feathers in the back that display in attracting the females for mating and does not help them in flying. Also, after careful analysis of those lines, it shows that there were orange and white; So they were colorful feathers.
