The data gives information about the a mount of food transported by different kinds of transport in The United States in the period between 1974 and 2002. The quantities are given in million tonnes.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that, while the quantity of goods transported by road, by shipping and by pipeline has increased, the railway food transport system, despite some fluctuations, remained the same throughout 28 years.
The largest amount of food in both 1974 and2002 was transported by road, 70 and almost 100, respectively. The sharpest rise in the food transportation by road was between 1994 and 1998, from 79 to 99.
Interestingly, the amount of food carried by water and railway was the same in 1974-1978, approximately 40. This, however, was followed by a substantial soar to 59 in shipping and a gradual decline to 30 in railway in the 1980s. Finally, the food transportation by water reached the amount of 65 million tonnes in 2002. Whereas the railway transportation, after several ups and downs, returned to its initial amount of 40.
As regards the lowest quantity of food transported, which was by pipeline, it was gradually increasing all over the period and in 1995 the patterns stabilized, remaining at 20 till 2002. This ends my report.
